After Mallworld, the Doctor and his companions help resolve the
crisis and head back to the TARDIS ahead of his three companions. 
Before Ben, Tegan, and Delmin can react, four Grotox Crew Pirates
ambush the Doctor, throwing a Warp Hoop over his head.  As the
hoop falls, the Doctor appears to disintegrate.  The three rush
forward, but the hoop reaches the ground, and the Doctor is gone.

 Ben's Log 10/2595 Sim

 Ben felt a strange calmness overtake him has he held Tegan.
Certianly he didn't want to die, but he wasn't afraid to die he
realized. His only regret that Tegan was doomed as well it
seemed. It didn't seem right to be giving up like this, but
perhaps it was for the best. What could he do anyway?

 Looking at Tegan brought about unpleasent memories of seeing his
poor friend Delmin being blasted by Daleks. Ben didn't realize
until then how much Delmin meant to him as a friend. But he knew
he had to be strong for Tegan. Plus he was sure he heard the
Daleks say they were to be taken alive. So perhaps Delmin was
still alive. He desperately hoped so. For if he was, then Delmin
could still possibly find the Doctor and stop this nightmare from
continuing.

Subj:   Delmin demats the TARDIS

Well, I figured that Steven knew how to dematerialize, so why not
Delmin?  He's been taking notes on the TARDIS and using his
NetLink in capture data (including flight procedure.)  Nothing
suspicious or anything, but he's a careful observor.

The GCP piloted the TARDIS, however, being programmed with the
console layout based on what Salyavin know about Type 40 TT
capsules, but only enough to bring the TARDIS to the Command
Vessel if necessary.  However, the Daleks regard the GCP as
expendable, and once the TARDIS was delivered, the Daleks
intended to kill Yedda, Opla, and Nuva.  Only Yedda was killed
(mostly for smarting off) Nuva and Opla reconsidered their
positions and made Ben and Tegan allies.

Tegan felt numb. Too much had happened too quickly. She clung to
Ben and cried, unable to get herself under control; too
bewildered to even try. Ben held her close, not quite knowing
what to say, simply listening and trying to be strong.

"Oh Ben! Poor Adric must have felt like this...so..so helpless to
stop what was going to happen to him...when he died...so all
alone..."

"And the Doctor! Where is he? If I only knew he was alright... If
we could just be there to make sure he's okay....I'm sure he
needs us..he always does..."

"Delmin!! The way he was laying there...If only I knew he was
still alive...I...I.. shouldn't have left him hurt and all alone!
He's always... ALWAYS, been there for me..I feel I've let him
down when he needed me most....I should have reached him somehow.
He'd have done it for me...he DID do it for me...several
times...."

"Daleks. I...I....I just froze when I saw them...I'm so sorry,
Ben. I'm afraid I wasn't much help back there...and now this."

Tegan quiets suddenly, pushes away from Ben a bit, and looks at
him, serious. "Ben, I want you to know how much you mean to
me..I...I've come to love you... like a brother....You've always
been there for me, and I'm sorry I treated you so
crummy....you're one of the nicest men I've ever known.."

Ben smiles and takes Tegan back into his hug, saying, "I know,
Teeg, I know....Crikey. I feel the same way about you, silly
girl." Tegan sighs, rests her head on Ben's shoulder, and wraps
her arms around him, hugging him in return.

The two companions turn to watch the viewscreen as the ship hurls
towards the planet's surface. Arm in arm, they wait, taking
comfort from each other.

Delmin's log, 10/25/95

   He had to think fast:  the Doctor had been kidnapped by four
Grotox Crew Pirates.  Delmin had dealt with them before during
the one moment of unity in his time in the Terran Senate.  These
descendants of miners who had created a crude cybernetic society
had trained a powerful army.  When their economy collapsed, they
became mercenaries.  And when the bounty became too enticing to
be held in check by honor, they evolved into competing crews of
pirates.  When they blackmailed Earth for control of Grotoxian
duralinium, they were displaced from Grotox and ostrocized from
Galactic society.
   Fortunately, Delmin knew they'd sell their captain to the
competition for a price.  When the leader of the four GCP
kidnapped the Doctor with a Warp Hoop and left his comrades
stranded, Delmin created a desperate plan.  The three Grotox Crew
Pirates knew where the Doctor was, and the TARDIS could get them
there.  Delmin shoved all three GCP into the TARDIS.
   Tegan and Ben immediately objected.  Too risky, they insisted. 
Delmin activated the dematerialization controls, to the surprise
of his friends.  But he had been watching the Doctor for weeks
and recording data on his NetLink.  Demat mode was the simplest
operation the TARDIS could perform.  Delmin hoped that after
weeks of studying it that he had gotten it right.
   Delmin wondered if Tegan and Ben realized what kind of crisis
they were facing.  Without the Doctor, the TARDIS would stay on
Mallworld, possibly forever.  Their jaunt through time and space
would end abruptly, and the Doctor would, perhaps, die.  The
three Grotox Crew Pirates set the coordinates, and the TARDIS
landed.
   The six beings emerged from the TARDIS and were surrounded by
three Daleks.  The GCP laughed at Delmin.  They had been briefed
on how to pilot the TARDIS back to the Dalek Command Vessel by
the Daleks themselves.  Anger flooded Delmin's heart.  He had
left himself and his friends vulnerable to three cutthroats.
   Delmin jumped one of the Daleks.  With one hand holding the
gun and the other on the eyestalk, Delmin practiced what he had
learned from Cassandra...  your opponent can't hurt you when
you're in his face.  Ben quickly took off his coat and threw one
over another.
   One of the GCP chided the Daleks for being taken unaware. 
Never creatures to take insolence lightly, the third Dalek
destroyed its ally.  The two surviving GCP opened fire on their
former employers.  They knew when a contract had expired.
   With the Dalek as a shield, Delmin strained to turn it toward
its own kind.  But the third Dalek fired upon them both.
   The Dalek began to sizzle and smoke.  Delmin felt his nerves
ignite and his body lurch backward.  Just as suddenly, his body
felt numb....  It slid down the Dalek casing to the floor.  The
smoking Dalek stood with its limbs limp.
   The GCP continued to fire on the Daleks and Tegan screamed. 
Ben pulled her away as the four unlikely allies fled to the small
GCP ship.  The second Dalek shook off the coat and pursued.  The
first ordered it to take the prisoners alive, and then turned to
its damaged companion.  The sizzling Dalek slowly began to
recover. 
   "I have sustained only minor damage," it reported.
   The first Dalek looked down at Delmin's body and saw no
movement.

The Doctor's Log

I have been kidnapped and brought to another part of the
universe, perhaps in Galaxy 5 -- it seems like that, anyway.

I have met an old enemy, the Black Dalek. As usual, they want me
to help them. I was imprisoned, but was able to escape. It seemed
almost too easy to escape, actually. I tried to interest my guard
(a Grotox Crew Pirate) in releasing me by manipulating the greed
inherent in these buccaneers, but it seemed to work too well.

After escaping, I was able to climb through a service duct and
eventually make my way into the computer control center. This was
also disturbingly easy. Once in the computer control center I was
able to begin a fuller investigation of the situation.

We are above the planet Arcassia in a huge Dalek control vessel.
The Daleks want to capture something called the Arcassian Oracle,
but are not having much luck. The defenders are holding out quite
well. 

However, I found out some other information which was very
disturbing.

A Timelord is here, as the prowl program indicated. This Timelord
is helping the Daleks design a new and more vicious Dalek machine
-- the Kalek. The Timelord in question seemed to be Lord Varda.

Lord Varda is known on Gallifrey as "the Great Traitor" for his
willingness to betray others, even his own people, for his
personal benefit and gain. He had been imprisoned on Shada and
had obviously escaped during my failed effort to stop the
breakout from the prison planet of the Timelords. Lord Varda was
a serious threat.

However, I have met Lord Varda and it is even worse than this. It
is not really Lord Varda, but Salyavin. The "evil" part of
Salyavin's character has won out over the "good" side (the friend
I love as Prof. Chronotis) and seems to have destroyed it.
Needing another body to escape his last life span, Salyavin seems
to have chosen the body of Lord Varda.

Salyavin has incredible mental powers, power enough to control
every Dalek or Kalek which is produced. With the most powerful
mind in the universe designing and leading the most evil
creatures in the universe, the situation looks incredibly grim.

Before I have barely managed to defeat the Daleks, but I may not
be able to defeat them if they are under the power of Salyavin's
dark side. This is the harvest of my shame, my inability to stop
the break out from Shada.

I am not certain that I can win this time. The odds are heavily
against me.

My Tardis is far, far away, and I am not able to recall it.
Perhaps K9 on the console will search for me.

My companions are far, far away, and will in all probability not
be able to find me. Ben, Tegan, Delmin are not here to help me
now that I need them most.

This time, I am truly alone, and all the odds are against me. I
must sharpen my mind and accelerate my creative and critical
thinking to find an answer. But for now, I have none.

Thus, perhaps I face my greatest challenge. But, I will not
surrender and I will not give up. If Tegan were here, she might
say, "Brave heart, Doctor." Well, her spirit is here with me. My
heart is encouraged.

Daleks, Kaleks, Lord Varda, Salyavin, these may be my greatest
challenge, but I am determined to show them that even if
defeated, I can be their greatest challenge as well!

Ben's Log 11/1/95

 Ben was tired, actually exhausted was a better word. The recent
experiences had taken a heavy toll on him. Only his loyalty to
the Doctor and his friends was keeping him going. But even that
was starting to strain him.

 The Oracle attached to his left palm glowed softly. One would
think Ben would be studying all he could about it. But instead,
Ben payed it practically no attention. He knew he should feel
honored and special that the Oracle had selected him to share its
power. At least Krubow, kept reminding him how grateful he should
be. Instead he felt...well he felt like the Oracle belonged
there. Like it was as natural as breathing. Perhaps it was the
Oracle itself that was making him feel this way. It certainly
made Ben feel calm and confident. But it didn't make him feel
good. Just that there was a job to be done.

 Soon they were at their destination. Ben hoped it would be a
simple thing, but knew better. Sure enough there was the Doctor
all but dead near another one of those power mad beings he had
seen too much. Actually this one reminded Ben of the incredibly
funny scientist, Zarnoff? Was that the name? The one that wanted
to raise Atlantis with all those fish people. When he saw this
Salyavin, Ben had to fight to keep from laughing. Not that
Salyavin was a laughing matter. But that these power mad beings
seemed to be a dime a dozen. Such confidence. Truly the Oracle
was doing something to Ben.

 The Doctor begged Ben not to engage Salyavin in a mind battle.
But Ben would not be put off. In fact, he seemed to want it
badly. Maybe this Oracle was the one actually wanting the fight.
It didn't matter. Ben was already trying to both fend off the
mental assualt of Salyavin, while at the same time trying to
force him to surrender.

 The first attacks were easy. Salyavin was a fool to place images
of Ben's father and Carolyn into his head. He had dealt with
those demons. In fact, Ben realized that his past, which had so
haunted him, seemed....well in the past. The pain seemed less.
The hurt gone. Was this too the oracle? Or was Ben finally able
to deal with it. No matter.

 But Salyavin was not put off. If he need to dig deeper in Ben's
mind to find a weakness, then so be it. Images of Nyssa's
rejection, Ben's stepdad's abuse, his mother's alcoholism, Polly
and Jonathan together, the regenrations of the Doctor, the deaths
of innocent people he had witness. Yes that was it! That was
Ben's weakness! The needless killings. The fact that Ben himself
had been force to kill. Salyavin had found it.
Without hesitation, he forced that into Ben's mind again and
again AND AGAIN! The voices, the screams, the deaths of these
people ringed into Ben's mind in an endless cycle. From the
innocents killed by the War Machines in 1966 to the deaths of
Nuva, Opla and Yedda so recent in his mind.

 Ben weakened and fell to his knees. But he would not give up! He
had the power of the Oracle and failure would be the deaths of
the Doctor, Tegan and Delmin. That was what he had to remind
himself. That he had the power not to add to the death toll. Ben
tried to force images of help, compassion and even love into
Salyavin's mind. After almost 3 years of traveling in the TARDIS,
Ben knew that love was all that mattered. But Ben's mind was
untrained, and it was all he could to do to defend himself let
alone keep up an effective assault.

 Still Ben would not yield. All else was forgotten but the
thought to not give up. If this was Senior CPO Benjamin Byron
Kenneth Jackson of Her Majesty's Royal Navy's fate was to be then
so be it!

 But then a searing pain ripped through his chest. What? No not
Salyavin! But what? A distraction? No! But it was too late! The
full thrust of Salyavin's mental attack poured into Ben's mind!
Ben screamed!

 And then there was darkness. And Ben was as still as death.

Tegan's Log 11-1-95

Here are some of the thoughts that went racing through Tegan's
head when she found herself facing the Black Dalek and all his
little Kalek friends:

This is so frustrating. Delmin sure looks bad.  Ben's off
somewhere with a box growing out of his hand??? The Doctor went
::poof:: and disappeared right before my very eyes!! And I am
stuck here in this room with a Dalek who isn't a Dalek??? All
this is really giving me a headache. I just don't know what's
going on, and I'm not sure exactly what to do about any of it.

All I do know is this:  If I am going to die at the end of some
stinking Dalek's smoking plungergun, then by golly, I am not
going out quietly!

Beta can just stand there and say "So be it" until they blast him
into a gross pile of oozing stinking rubble.....I'm not going to
just stand here and take it like a good little girl. 

I am tired of running from Daleks....Their voices grate on my
nerves..... they stink like some kind of grease monkeys.... they
haven't got any manners, never listening to a thing anyone has to
say.... and who made them God anyway, always running around like
they own the Galaxy? 

If this is the way I am going to go, then at least maybe I can
get a good kick in first!!

Salyavin's log,  11/1/95

  Salyavin's plan was succeeding.
  The Doctor had been captured.  This ensured no untimely
interference and guarenteed a way to control the Arcassian Oracle
without a Controller.  With his friends and TARDIS captured, the
Doctor would not refuse.  And even if he did, Salyavin would
insert Loyalty into his brain.  This Loyalty might damage the
Doctor's higher faculties, but it was a chance Salyavin was
willing to take.  He promised himself to harm the Doctor only if
he had refused to oblige.
   The Black Dalek and Kaleks were under Salyavin's mental heel. 
They obeyed his orders as willingly as if they had come from the
Emperor.
   But while on Arcassia, the Doctor had tried to escape.  He
destroyed a Kalek after receiving a glancing blow from the
creature's powerful weaponry.  The Doctor lay dying, about to
regenerate, when Salyavin injected a wave of psychic power into
his enemy, saving his life.  Salyavin, temporarily drained of
power, sat next to the Doctor and whispered to some ghost in his
ear: "I kept my promise... I kept it."
   Then, utlimate serendipity.  The Oracle had been brought to
him by its Adept.  The foolish human, Ben, far from being a
competant Controller, engaged Salyavin in a mind duel.  Ben had
no chance but put up a tremendous fight, aidied by the Oracle. 
But Salyavin was aided by the Kaleks...  A terminal blast struck
Ben, allowing Salyavin to assert complete control of the Oracle.
   Salyavin held the Oracle aloft.  Despite the fact it would not
obey Salyavin's direct commands as it did Ben's, Salyavin had it
in his power.
   The Kaleks shouted "Victory!" as Salyavin announced his
triumph!  With the Oracle, Salyavin's power would increase by a
factor of eight.  Not only could Salyavin implant parts of his
mind into others, but the Oracle would allow him to make
fundamental changes in his target's minds.  Gallifrey's corrupt
High Council would dissolve itself willingly and all Gallifrey
would accept President Salyavin.  All of the Daleks would
simultaneously obey the will of the President, eliminating all
other alien races that would dare to enslave space and time.
   The Cybermen would be melted down.  The cloning tanks of the
Sontarans destroyed.  The Ice Warriors would be made peaceful. 
And Earth would finally beat weapons into ploughshares.  All
under the rule of Salyavin.

The Doctor's Log

It almost feels like the end.

Literally. The end. I can see the void from where I am now.

Having been shot by the Kalek, my body was severely damaged and I
began to regenerate. I know what it feels like. It has happened
before. All of my failings and triumphs were briefly paraded
before me.

But, it didn't happen. Salyavin intervened to save me. Why? He
spoke of a promise. What promise?

If I had regenerated I might have had some plan to extricate all
of creation from the situation I confronted.

The Daleks were on the move, and this time they had developed a
new vicious killer strain of Daleks -- the Kaleks.

They were designed and were now being directed by Salyavin. The
evil force within that powerful Timelord was triumphant, and the
beloved part I had known as Prof. Chronotis was gone.

Enter the Arcassian Oracle. A powerful emotional projection
device, with it and his already considerable powers Salyavin
would make the entire universe, including Gallifrey, do his will
and enjoy it. How revolting! With the Daleks and the Kaleks as
his hands and feet, his triumph would be complete.

Empty triumph, of course, from the perspective of any sane
individual, but it all seemed to make sense to him.

And now Ben, lifeless at my feet, having lost an encounter with
Salyavin. The universe did not lack a true champion! Nor are the
lists of champions empty yet. Tegan is still operating, and what
of Delmin? Krubow seems ready to act, and spoke of a Dalek named
Beta. Beta? Could it be my friend Beta? Perhaps a conceptual
boomerang thrown long ago by myself can return from an unseen
direction and knock Salyavin's plan!

Salyavin's weakness is that he doesn't know everything, and his
attention will be down during his gloating. I'll give him
something to gloat over, and wait for his guard to drop.

If the British seaman Ben can do this much, how can I do any
less?

No, it isn't the end. The end will come when my body and
consciousness are erased from the universe. Until then, Salyavin
has not defeated me!

Relative Date: November 14, 2395 (?)

Ben has left.  But I barely remember anything after being blasted
by that Dalek.  I am able to intuit that Ben & I said goodbye,
and that he's alright.  More than alright, actually!

Daleks...  There was a scare when I was a kid... maybe it was
2373?  My father was shaken to the core.  A scout ship had found
a Dalek escape pod.  It contained one dead Dalek, but no one
could determine the pod's origin.  The Dalek was examined, no
clues were found, and no invasion came.  I was so stupid to jump
that Dalek.  Those GCP betrayed me and I fell for it too.

Such is life.  I miss Ben already.  But Tegan has told me that
there are a lot of comings and goings on board the TARDIS.  Maybe
I'll be one of them shortly too.  I need a purpose, I've
discovered.  A project, like ferreting out Troygon Corp.  I can't
stand aimlessness.  Perhaps the TARDIS will find a place just for
me.  And maybe Tegan as well?

Tegan's Log 11-8-95

Dear Dairy,

I haven't had time to write for a while. This seems like a good
time to gather all my thoughts together. 

Ben is gone. And it makes me sad.  I didn't get to give him a
real farewell, but I'm glad I got to tell him how much he meant
to me, back on the shuttle when we thought we were going to die. 

He was a great guy, even if he did drive me crazy sometimes with
that macho act of his. Ben was more like a brother to me than
Jilamey in a lot of ways. He accepted me as I was, and didn't put
me down like JJ did. He wasn't all stuffy like JJ either. He was
always cracking jokes or teasing. I wonder if he really did hate
my shoes, or if he was just trying to get a rise out of me? 

I find myself missing Ben, looking for him in the library or
starting towards his room and then remembering he is gone. I
guess it will take time to get used to his not being here. One
thing about Ben; he was always there when I needed him.

But thinking sad stuff like this is really selfish on my part. I
know that Ben is where he should be, and that he is happy and
content. Beta promised to send him "home", and I just have to
believe that he is smiling and laughing wherever "home" is. I
hope being "home" for Ben means being with Polly. He seemed to
always be thinking about her. Yes. I'm sure of it. He's with
Polly, and the two of them are probably laughing and remembering
their adventures with the Doctor. I hope he will think of me
fondly from time to time. 

So, here I am on the Tardis. Beta sent me here. 

I guess that means that the Tardis is where I am supposed to be.
Being sent here seems to be a confirmation of my desire to want
to rejoin the Doctor a while back. The Tardis does feel like
"home" to me. True, it's not always easy to be in the Tardis, but
real homes aren't perfect. They come with their share of problems
and joys, triumphs and sad times. I think the thing that makes a
place a "home" is the love and acceptance you find there. And no
where, NO WHERE, have I ever been more loved or accepted for who
I am than on the Tardis. Here, I am free to be myself. Here, I
feel at ease. Here, I am surrounded by people who care and look
out for me. Here, I am home.

The Doctor is the reason I feel so at home. He doesn't condemn
me. He accepts me, listens to me, and makes me feel like I am
capable of doing anything I set my mind to. He seems to value me,
when others have laughed me off. I'll have to make a point to
tell him thank you someday.

And then there's Delmin. He seems like another great guy, and is
sort of cute in a scruffy kind of way. He's always around in a
crisis and is a real whiz with computers. I haven't known him
long, but am pleased that we seem to get along. I value him as a
friend. Ben seems to think there is something between us, but how
could there be? We've only just met! Friends that's all, and
that's just the way I want it. A friend I just also happen to
feel very "at home" with.

I'll write more next time. Right now I am going to soak my poor
feet. Running around in those high heels really hurt. I have got
to find my flats. I am starting to wonder if Ben hid them away
somewhere as a practical joke! Now I'll never know. If he was
here, I'd get him back good!

The Doctor's Log

No matter how long I continue wandering the corridors of time, I
still have a chance to learn new things about the truth of things
temporal.

The past, the present, the future ... and the alternatives which
exist for all of them ... all of these are different branches of
time, but I have now discovered something about a type of time.

Shared time. Time is different when shared with others. It
tastes, feels, and smells different. It is more complex, this
shared time, but infinitely more rewarding than solitary time.

Ben is gone. Oh, he is well set up. I had arranged a new start
for him on Earth some time ago, but it was the Oracle which took
him there. His home is no longer the Tardis. His time is no
longer Tardis time. And Tardis time is my time.

We no longer share that time. 

Shared time involves mutual experience, different perceptions of
the same events, and resultant misunderstandings. It involves
disagreement, cooperation, and joint success and failure.

Ben and I disagreed and misunderstood each other at times. But
there was a glorious sharing in all of our times together -- each
of us concerned about the other. Locked in a force field I could
not break out of, I could wait for Ben to arrive and free me.
Swallowed by a giant reptile, Ben would rally the villagers to
try and cut it open and set me free. Oh, and it worked the other
way as well. 

I still have this shared time, but with Delmin and Tegan, no
longer with Ben. One of my longest and most treasured companions.
Perhaps that is why his going is so difficult for me. No glib
phrases or hollow farewells could I verbalize at the moment of
our parting. I hope Ben knows that it was not because I have
nothing to say to him. It is because no simple words could convey
what he has meant to me. He saw me at my bravest, and at my
lowest -- on Liana, on Gallifrey when I saw Lora again. Yet, he
did not change his tone to me. I was able to be vulnerable in
front of Ben. I don't feel secure enough to do that with very
many people.

My shared time with Ben was special in that way. I may not find
someone to share time with in that way again. Now my obligations
are to my current companions. Tegan, another returned companion
(her third session in the Tardis) is strong but needs me to be
strong as well. Daniel ... well, we need to get to know each
other better. Ben has been an anchor for me, and now I must learn
to depend on Tegan and Daniel more. Farewell, Ben,  my truest of
companion. I shall attempt to avoid your path from here on. But,
one never knows.

My path, however, is set. Now, having dealt with Salyavin, and
Gamester, and Lord Varda the Great Traitor, I have made a
substantial impact on neutralizing the criminal Timelords who
escaped from Shada. I have refined the prowl program, and I am
ready to continue my pursuit. I want to tap into the Matrix on
Gallifrey to construct a list of Shada escapees. I want to build
a list and then cross them off one by one. In this way I can
atone for my failure on Shada.

But perhaps a brief diversion first. I wonder what Tegan and
Daniel think.

Ben's Farewell Log 11/8/95

 Ben tried to make sense of it all. What had happened? One minute
he is with the Doctor and Tegan with a bunch of Daleks, and the
next he is here having lunch with Polly in a resturant.

 The year? 1990! How could that be? Both of them should be in
their late 40s now, but Ben looked at felt no older than he did
when he left the Doctor. What had happened? He had to know.

 Polly looked at her friend with genuine confusion. Ben had acted
strange all morning. Not that that was unsual, she smiled to
herself. But he seemed disoriented and distant. She heard him
talking about the Doctor earlier. No telling what he was doing
now. But for Ben to bring that subject up struck her, for some
reason, with alarm.

 She asked him if his memory was finally returning. Finally? he
asked. All he knew was that one minute he was with the Doctor,
and the next here he was.

 Polly revealed to Ben that he had been living in London for the
last 3 years. She remembered how she found him at her doorstep 3
years ago very dazed and confused, not knowing where he had been.
She assumed he had been with the Doctor. Who for some reason
chose to abandon Ben in a strange year, with no memory, and
nobody.

 How wrong she was. Trying to help Ben back into society, she was
suprised that it seemed that the Doctor, or at least somebody,
had gone to great pains to make sure the road was easy. Ben had
an apartment in his name, plenty of money in a bank account, and
an honorable discharge from the Royal Navy. Ben soon began to
settle into a civilian life. He retained little open memories of
his experiences on the TARDIS. But soon discovered he had a
creative talent to write science fiction based stories. Polly
figured that he was subconsciously writing of his adventures with
the Doctor. Soon, magazines, book publishers, and even the BBC
was interested in Ben's work. In only a few years, he had become
one of the most sought out writers in the business.

 Ben was astonished! But then he remembered the Oracle's promise
to place him in the era where he belonged. Never in a million
years would he have guess that it would be here. He now told
Polly all he remembered. About his adventures with the Doctor
between her leaving with Jonathan and him coming here. His
regeneration, Peter temporarily rejoining the TARDIS, followed by
Tegan and Delmin. Finally ending with the adventures with the
Oracle of Arcassia and the Daleks. 

 Tegan? Polly found herself slightly jealous of her, since Ben
described her in such glowing terms. But Ben explained that they
were just good friends. Actually he had hoped that she and Delmin
would eventually hit it off. About Delmin, Ben remarked that it
was like saying goodbye to a best friend. He hoped the two of
them would find happiness somewhere.

 But he talked mostly about the Doctor. Ben remarked how he never
known how lonely the Doctor truly was until this regeneration.
The Doctor was the type who could be in a room full of people and
still be alone. But worse, admitted Ben, was when it came time to
say goodbye Ben couldn't find any words to say. Nothing. Not even
goodbye to the person who was like a father to him.

 Polly smiled. The Doctor knows how you feel about him Ben, don't
worry about that. And know that he probably thinks about you
every so often.

 "But why are you here?" asked Ben. "Where's Jonathan?" Polly
knew he'd eventually ask this. And was not looking forward to
answering him. She gave an evasive answer. There were
differences. They traveled in time and space for a while in the
TARDIS Jonathan said he was going to build. But she had to live.
She wouldn't say anymore, and Ben realized not to ask further for
now.

 Ben then asked about his family. To his satisfaction, he learned
that his mother had divorced his stepfather and now lived within
walking distance of Ben's apartment. Ben ached to go see her
immediately. But Polly told him that he had an appointment with a
Hollywood producer in less than a hour, and they'd better get
ready.

 "We?" asked Ben.
 "Of course, my dear", smiled Polly "I'm your partner in case
you've forgotten!"

 Ben laughed as they payed their bill and left the resturant.

 Later that evening Ben was alone in his apartment and found to
his delight a picture of the Doctor with him, Tegan, and Delmin.
A tear ran down his cheek as he wished his friends well wherever
they may be.

 He put the picture down and decided to watch some television
before calling it a night.
